Finally … a guide that trains your flock to work with you …
That’s right … with Gardening with Chickens by Lisa Steele, you don’t merely tolerate chickens in the garden. You design the garden around them, turning their habits into your homestead’s greatest asset.
For every gardener who’s lost plants to scratching hens … for every chicken keeper frustrated with destroyed beds … this book gives you the systems, plans, and plant guides you need to bring harmony (and abundance) to both garden and coop.
Whether you’re new to chickens or a seasoned keeper, Lisa Steele brings a lifetime of insight to show you how to harness their energy, not fight it.
What You’ll Get Inside
Here’s just a small taste of the tools, plans, and strategies waiting for you in Gardening with Chickens:
Themed Garden Layouts: design gardens with herbs for nesting, yolk-enhancing greens, insect-repelling zones, and more
Plants Safe for Hens (and ones to avoid): detailed plant lists so your chickens enrich rather than destroy
Seasonal Systems: what to plant, how to use your flock, and how to protect your garden across spring, summer, fall, and winter
Chicken as Garden Workers: steps to train your flock to till, weed, aerate, control pests
Composting + Fertility: how to use chicken manure (without burning plants or risking disease) and make “chicken poop tea”
Edible Garden Integration: grow treats that feed both your hens and your family
Problem-Solving Tactics: how to prevent flock invasions, protect delicate seedlings, and keep balance

I haven’t had a chance to read the whole book, but have thumb through it and have read a lot of it. GREAT information and very helpful. Written in plain English so it’s easy to understand. I love this book and am happy to read it and add it to my library for a reference.

I just received my preorder and read the book cover to cover twice! It is much better than the 1st edition, it contains so much more! I finally got a better sense of how to manage the incoming new flock and how to design my run. I have never kept chickens before, had parrots only, so I read many books, articles, watched videos and talked to keepers but only Lisa offered me the route I was looking for and this book in particular that she wrote had the most profound impact. I look forward to the greenhouses opening this spring so I can buy some plants for my new girls. Thank you so much Lisa for helping out the chicken community!
