“As we foster and nourish relationships with the plants in our care, we’ll ultimately learn more about ourselves as well. Be patient, be kind, and as always – happy growing.”

— Bevin Cohen

A gardening book written by a seasoned gardener, for people who actually want to grow real food.

The Homestead Garden: Planning, Planting, and Harvesting 50 Food Crops at Home is a complete, from-the-soil-up guide born from a lifetime of growing … not from theory, but from gardens of every size, from a grandmother’s balcony pots to in-ground plots that needed a tractor.

For every beginner who’s never lifted a shovel … for every busy homesteader short on time or space … for every experienced grower who wants to see the garden as a living relationship instead of a checklist … this book meets you right where you are.

Whether you have a few containers on a porch or a full homestead plot, Bevin Cohen walks you from healthy soil and good seed all the way to harvest, with 50 of the most useful homestead crops along the way. He shows that gardening is simply learning what a plant needs and how to give it … then slowing down enough to let nature do the rest.

This is the practical companion for anyone who wants to grow delicious food, make peace with mistakes, and build a garden that actually feeds the life they’re living.

What you’ll find inside The Homestead Garden …

Here’s just a small taste of the tools, plans, and strategies waiting for you in Gardening with Chickens:

A Garden Built from the Soil Up: Bevin starts where a garden starts (with soil) then walks you through seeds, tools, planning, planting, watering, mulching, pests, and harvest.

Healthy Soil Made Simple: How to test your soil (including an easy jar test), understand nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and pH, and rebuild fertility with compost, cover crops, and amendments.

Quality Seed, From Source to Storage: How to choose locally adapted seed, use seed libraries and swaps, store seed so it stays viable, and run a simple germination test.

The Tools You Need: A practical tour of digging, watering, and maintenance tools … plus the reminder that none of them are mandatory. Seeds, soil, water, and sun are enough to start.

Planning a Garden That Fits Your Life: How to choose a site, work with the sun you have, map your beds, rotate crops, give plants proper spacing, and resist the urge to grow too much too soon.

Raised Beds, In-Ground Plots, and Containers: How to build and fill raised beds, grow in pots, and set up the space you actually have … balcony, backyard, or homestead plot.

Compost, Mulch, and Water: How to make compost, mulch with what nature already provides (including leaves, grass, straw, and even weeds), set up drip irrigation or soaker hoses, and catch rainwater.

50 Homestead Crops, Profiled One by One: Practical growing guides for the most useful food and herb crops … including tomatoes, corn, potatoes, onions, turnips, rutabagas, wheat, radishes, and medicinal and culinary herbs.

Variety Help That Matches Your Space and Climate: Recommendations for choosing the right variety, including options for small spaces, different regions, and crops worth trying next.

Harvest: How to pick regularly so plants keep producing, put the garden to bed.

A Beginner-Friendly Path with Extra Depth: Written so someone who has never planted a seed can start … with enough lived-in detail for gardeners who have been at it for years.

And much, much more.

Pre-order today, you’ll also get these three FREE bonuses …

6-Month Free Trial to the Small House Farm Patreon: Spend six months with Bevin behind the garden gate … seasonal teaching, practical guidance, and the kind of ongoing help that turns a book into a living garden.

Bevin’s Pasta Primavera Recipe (PDF): A light garlic-and-lemon pasta for the first real harvest of the year. Use peas, asparagus, zucchini, and tomatoes … or whatever is coming fresh from your garden.

Bevin’s Summer Harvest Ratatouille Recipe (PDF): A late-summer casserole of eggplant, zucchini, tomatoes, thyme, and basil. Simple enough for a tired garden evening. Beautiful enough to serve to company.

This book is the practical companion for anyone who wants to grow delicious food, make peace with mistakes, and build a garden that actually feeds the life they’re living.
